Ten years after he retired, Dejan Bodiroga is an NBA free agent. No, there’s nothing wrong with your browser, and you’re not reading the “Onion. You’re still connected to Eurohoops. And this is a true story.
The Sacramento Kings have owned the Bodiroga’s rights since they selected him with the 51st overall pick in the 1995 NBA Draft. As you probably already know, the now legendary Serbian player never took his talents to the NBA but kept them in European soil where he won numerous team and individual distinctions. Among them, he became three-time EuroLeague champion with Panathinaikos (2000, 2002) and Barcelona (2003) while also winning the Final Four MVP twice (2002, 2003).
The two-time (1998, 2002) world champion with the Serbian national team “hang” his shoes in 2007 but his NBA rights remained owned by the Sacramento Kings. Well, according to American journalist Keith Smith, the club has renounced these rights.
And now, a decade following his retirement, Bodiroga is officially…. free to pursue a contract with the NBA team of his choice. Hurrah!
The Sacramento Kings have renounced the draft rights for Dejan Bodiroga. He's a free agent. He's 44 years old.
