Panathinaikos Athens has sent an official letter to ABA League, expressing the interest of potentially joining the championship, as SDNA first reported and Eurohoops can confirm.
In the letter, Panathinaikos mentions that they want to compete in a “top-level” league and “in the championship that Olympiacos competes.”.
Panathinaikos doesn’t intend to leave the Greek League but play in both competitions, apart from EuroLeague.
ABA League CEO Kresimir Novosel has confirmed that Olympiacos has indeed expressed an official interest of playing in the competition via an inquiry regarding the league’s operations and shareholder structure.
Olympiacos has been pondering to leave the Greek League and join ABA League following the events in the Greek Cup semifinal between the team and Panathinaikos Athens. The Reds forfeited the game at halftime in protest of the officiating.
In the aftermath of the semifinal, Olympiacos has refused to play any league game vs. Panathinaikos unless officiated by non-Greek referees, starting from this week’s game.
