Spanish great Marc Gasol will be officially making his return to the Spanish ACB League with Basquet Girona this week (28/9) after 14 years, the club announced.
Gasol, who founded this new edition of Girona in 2014 and has been the club president ever since, was previously unable to register as a player in the ACB according to the league’s rules. As Marca reported, the ACB assembly unanimously approved a change in the rules that allows someone to be both club president and player, thus Gasol will be now able to hold both positions.
While Gasol retains these roles, he won’t be able to represent Girona in the ACB meetings as president.
Gasol, 37, joined Girona last December and helped them promote from second-tier LEB Oro to the top division. The three-time NBA All-Star and champion in 2019 averaged 14.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.1 steals.
From 2006 to 2008, Gasol played for CB Girona before he embarked on his NBA career. That club dissolved in 2013, and a couple of years later, Gasol’s “Club Escola Bàsquet Marc Gasol” was renamed Basquet Girona and became the city’s main basketball organization.
