Max Heidegger scored six out of his team-high 18 points in overtime as Baskonia beat Unicaja Malaga 89 – 81 to get a solid away win before the Spanish Cup tournament (Copa del Rey) on 16-19 of February.
Heidegger drained two triples during a 1 – 10 run thanks to which Baskonia grabbed a 79 – 88 lead with 2:19 left. Malaga just managed to make three free throws overall in overtime and fell after leading 58 – 51 at the end of the third quarter.
Kendrick Perry had a superb performance of 29 points, eight assists and six rebounds for Malaga but his team fell short in the fourth quarter and extra period. After trailing for the entire second half, Baskonia went up in the last minutes of regulation and Tyler Kalinoski hit the game-tying triple for the 78 with 25 seconds remaining.
Darius Thompson and Vanja Marinkovic contributed 15 points apiece for Baskonia, scoring nine and eight respectively in the fourth period.
Baskonia improved to 16-4 and the third place with this win while Malaga is fifth at 13-7. Real Madrid remains the standings leader after beating UCAM Murcia 88 – 80 behind Edy Tavares’ (18 points, 11 rebounds) and Mario Hezonja’s (16 points, 10 rebounds) performances. Barcelona is also 15-7 thanks to a victory over Rio Breogan but Real has the tiebreaker.
After a powerful clutch performance and the buzzer-beating game-winner at Panathinaikos Athens in EuroLeague, Chris Jones continued his heroics in crunch time. This time, he had the last nine points of Valencia while scoring 21 overall in a 82 – 76 victory over Gran Canaria.
