While FC Barcelona was advancing in the ACB Playoffs against Valencia, another Catalan team was dealing with its near future, as Basquet Girona and its head coach Aito Garcia Reneses parted ways on June 2.
The 76-year-old coach, who has been on high-level caliber benches such as Spain’s, Barcelona’s, Joventut Badalona’s, and ALBA Berlin’s, among others, came back to the ACB in the summer of 2022 to coach the newly promoted Catalan side. Having an 11-23 record in the Spanish league, Girona finished in the 15th position, avoiding relegation with Marc Gasol and Kameron Taylor on board.
“The club would like to thank him for his work as the head of the team and wish him the best in his next challenges. Girona Basketball is already working on preparing the staff for next season”, the club’s official press release says.
During his 50-year career as a head coach, Aito Garcia Reneses has collected several trophies in his cabinet. He won 9 Spanish championships, 5 Copa del Rey, 2 German titles, 2 Korac Cups, 1 FIBA EuroCup, 1 ULEB Cup, and more.
