MURCIA, Spain – Unicaja defeated the host, UCAM Murcia, by a very tight 74-79 in which defense proved to be the key once again. Specifically, Ibon Navarro’s men managed to steal a total of 16 balls to set a new record in the Endesa Super Cup and make their way to the final.
This is the third-highest figure ever recorded in the tournament. Only Real Madrid (23) surpassed it in the inaugural match played almost 40 years ago, and Joventut (19) at the beginning of this century.
Nihad Djedovic not only got three steals but was also Unicaja‘s offensive reference in the victory against UCAM Murcia. The Bosnian forward added 13 points and six rebounds.
“It was a tough game, especially now right after the World Cup where players are coming and without practicing with everybody. We found strength, we knew it would be tough“, said Djedovic in a quick interview with Eurohoops.
Djedovic praised also Canada’s bronze medalist Melvin Ejim for his performance with the team.
“Hats off to him for the performance and the way he switched after being in the World Cup, after all, games and emotions“.
