Bàsquet Girona is in a slump and many things had to change. The first big decision involved Salva Camps, who was sacked after seven consecutive defeats in the Endesa League, which made the team go from dreaming about making it to the Copa del Rey to facing relegation.

Many names surfaced but there is an old acquaintance from the Endesa League who, at the moment, is the best positioned to take care of the Catalan bench. As Eurohoops sources confirm, Fotis Katsikaris is the first option for Bàsquet Girona.

Although the agreement has not yet been closed, the club and play-caller are actively working on it and it would not be surprising if the official announcement were made in the next few hours.

Marc Gasol explains the situation

A few hours after officially announcing the departure of Salva Camps, Marc Gasol appeared at a press conference to explain the decision. “We are here today to communicate the dismissal of Salva Camps as leader and coach of the first team. It is a painful situation because we all expected it to work well, we are co-responsible for the situation, but we need a change for the team to react and recover a good dynamic that we have lost for several days now”.

Gasol also revealed in the press room that the club is trying to ensure that the new coach (Katsikaris) arrives as soon as possible. “We will work so that the new coach arrives before the end of this week, but it is not guaranteed. As for signings, we will wait for the new coach to arrive to see how we can strengthen ourselves if the new coach believes that we should strengthen ourselves.”

Familiar face

If his arrival at Bàsquet Girona is confirmed, this would be the seventh Liga Endesa team that the Greek tactician coaches: Valencia Basket, Bilbao Basket, UCAM Murcia (two stints), Lenovo Tenerife, Dreamland Gran Canaria and Unicaja de Málaga, his last team in 2022, were his previous teams.
