Real Madrid bounced back in the ACB against Basquet Girona

In what was the week of Marc Gasol’s official retirement from basketball, his club couldn’t make it in Madrid, celebrating his legacy with an upset victory against the leader of the ACB standings.

Chus Mateo’s team, after losing on the road in Gran Canaria, bounced back against Basquet Girona by winning 92-79 at home. With this victory, Real Madrid is still alone on top with an 18-3 record, followed straight behind by Unicaja Malaga at 17-4.

The pick-and-roll connection between Facundo Campazzo and Vincent Poirier was particularly effective: the Argentinian point guard had 17 points and 8 assists, while the French center followed with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 7/8 from the field.

On the losing side, coached by Fotis Katsikaris, Ike Iroegbu led the team in scoring with a losing effort of 16 points, while both Yves Pons and Gyorgy Goloman had pretty good showings of 12 points and 5 rebounds against the top team in both ACB and EuroLeague.

Another EuroLeague team was involved in ACB’s action early on Sunday, as Baskonia couldn’t escape with a victory from Tenerife, where Txus Vidorreta’s team won by 17 points (95-78) thanks to the umpteenth great game by Marcelinho Huertas. He had 18 points and 6 assists in the win.

Chima Moneke led the way for Baskonia with 16 points and 6 rebounds in the Basque team’s losing effort, while Nikos Rogkavopoulos continues to grow: the Greek forward had 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists, taking advantage of the lack of resources in Dusko Ivanovic’s team’s frontline.
