Facu Campazzo scored nine out of his team-high 16 points in the last three minutes to push Real Madrid past UCAM Murcia 84 – 79 and on to the Spanish Copa del Rey semifinals.
After Murcia approached 71 – 70 with four minutes remaining after coming back from down 66 – 56, Campazzo dropped four straight points, including a big 3-point play to put Real beyond a shooting distance once more. Dylan Ennis (team-high 17 points) responded with a basket but then Campazzo drove through the opposing defense to put Real up 80 – 76 with 29 seconds to play.
When Troy Caupain kept Murcia in the game with a triple for the 82 – 79, Campazzo made a pair of free throws to secure his team’s win.
Gabriel Deck contributed 15 points for Real that led 49 – 35 early in the second half before Murcia’s comeback. Mario Hezonja had 14 points and seven rebounds.
Sergio Llull scored 13 on 3-7 triples, becoming the player with the most 3-pointers in Copa del Rey history with 65, passing Juan Carlos Navarro who retired with 63.
Marko Todorovic added 14 points for Murcia.
In the other quarterfinal game held Thursday, Valencia beat Gran Canaria 89 – 81 in overtime behind 17 points and seven rebounds by Brandon Davies. The Taronja will play against Real in the semifinal stage.
Massimo Brussino forced the extra period for Gran Canaria with a triple at the buzzer of regulation, turning it around from down 77 – 69 with 82 seconds to play. Despite losing this kind of margin, Valencia recovered in overtime to get the win.
Sylven Landesberg led Gran Canaria with 25 points.
