Real Madrid took a 2-0 lead in the ACB Finals against UCAM Murcia, and Rudy Fernandez stole the show. Not because he was the top scorer for the winning side, but because he potentially played his last game in Madrid.
The series moves to Murcia, and Real will have two chances to claim the title on the road. It has been known for some time that Rudy will announce his retirement after this season and the Olympics in Paris.
Therefore, the audience gave him a standing ovation when he left the court and applauded him for 15 minutes after the end of the game.
“There are a lot of emotions going into today because this may be the last game here. But I leave with the feeling that I have done a good job and that I have given everything to this club. Today’s recognition has been incredible, and I take it into my life in general. I am grateful to the people who have helped me along this path,” Rudy Fernandez said.
He reflected on his almost 13 years with Real Madrid.
“There have been many years, battles, titles, and defeats. I think I made the best decision by coming here, and I thank the people who made it possible, first of all, the president. I hope today has been a farewell because I don’t have to return for the fifth game. I will take this with me for a lifetime. And on top of that, experiencing it with my family has been something incredible.”
Even though this might be goodbye, he hopes the final series won’t return to the Spanish capital.
“This has not ended here; there is one more game left. This could be the last, but we know that Murcia is a great team. With all due respect to Murcia, I hope not to return, it is clear,” legendary Rudy Fernandez concluded.
