After four straight defeats to Barcelona, Basquet Girona prevailed 91-90 and got a huge win thanks to Ike Iroegbu who had 25 points and the winning basket with 1.7 seconds left in the game.
With no timeouts left, Jabari Parker took the ball, but couldn’t do much, missing near halfcourt after the time had already expired.
It was the first win of Girona over Barça in the Marc Gasol era, as the Spanish basketball legend is the club president and attended the game.
Justin Anderson with 26 points had an amazing game, but it was not enough with Kevin Punter adding 15 points. However, in the end, nobody could save the day, even if Barcelona led 85-75 with three minutes left in the game.
It was just the 4th win of the season for Girona (4-11) which is fighting to avoid relegation and remains last in the standings, while Barcelona with a 7-8 record remains in the ninth spot of the standings, currently out of the Copa Del Rey lineup.
As coach Joan Penarroya said: “It is clear that the position we are in is not what a team like ours should be in. I know what it means to be a coach, I will put all my efforts into getting this thing through, so that the team improves and changes this negative dynamic of results. It is what it is, the Cup is difficult (to get to), and it’s a reality that we should not be in the situation we are in today. We feel tension, it’s an unexpected situation that we do not like and this affects us emotionally.”
