MoraBanc Andorra hires 61-year-old Joan Plaza as the new head coach with a contract until the end of the season

An experienced head coach in Joan Plaza took over MoraBanc Andorra.

The ACB outfit announced the new play-caller for the remainder of the 2024-25 season on Thursday.

This is the first hob for the 61-year-old Catalonian tactician since his exit from AEK midway through the 2023-24 season and his well-documented financial dispute with the storied Greek club.

The assignment meets Andorra at 5-12 and battling to avoid relegation in the 2024-25 edition of Spain’s Liga Endesa. Earlier in the season, his new side competed in the Qualification Rounds of the Basketball Champions League but fell shy of clinching a berth in the Regular Season.

Plaza is a veteran of 457 ACB games over 14 years as a head coach in the top-tier division of Spain, besides accolades stretching to winning the ULEB Cup in 2007 and the 7DAYS EuroCup in 2017. Another career highlight was being named ACB Best Coach in 2008. From starting his coaching journey with Joventut Badalona in 2000 to Real Madrid, Cajasol Sevilla, Zalgiris, Unicaja Malaga, Zenit, Coosur Real Betis, and AEK over the last two decades.

In the opposite direction and following elimination in the Play-Ins of the BCL, Hapoel Netanel Holon parted ways with Guy Goodes upon a mutual agreement. Leading assistant Guy Kaplan was named interim head coach until further notice. Focusing on the domestic league for the rest of the season, Hapoel Holon is looking to improve a current 9-5 W-L tally in Israel’s Winner League Regular Season.
