Granada guard Gian Clavell had a brush with death last week due to complications from appendicits, his wife revealed on Instagram.
Clavell had joined the Puerto Rican national team during February’s games for the 2025 FIBA Americup Qualifiers. Upon his return to Spain, he had to undergo emergency operation for appendicitis.
Here’s what Clavell’s wife Miriam Munoz wrote:
“As many of you know, Gian was admitted to the ICU in the early hours of the 26th [of February]. I wanted to let you know that he is stable today.
Gian almost left us that damned early morning due to a febrile seizure due to the severe infection that had spread from the appendicitis with which he arrived in Spain. He underwent emergency surgery and the operation went super well, but the infection reached his blood and that is why he was admitted to the ICU, which is where everything is best and most controlled.
Thank you to all the people who are praying for him. Thank you for every message and call of concern and love. Thank you to the team of nurses and doctors at the hospital where he is admitted for the quick and successful action to save his life. Thank you to the entire Covirán Granada team for their support and love at all times. Yesterday was undoubtedly the worst day of my life. With my heart in my mouth… but positive.
My husband is a bull, on and off the field”
Clavell, 31, has played for European clubs in Spain, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and Greece since he began his career in 2017. This season he’s averaging 9.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists with Granada in ACB.
