Eimantas Bendzius scored 21 points, Mickey McConnel had 17 and 12 assists as Obradoiro delivered the shocker of the year in Liga Endesa by beating Real Madrid 90 – 83 at home on the back of an excellent second half.
This is the fourth defeat in the last five games of the Spanish League for the defending champs that are now third with a 16 – 7 record. Curiously, their only win came in the Clasico vs Barcelona.
The team from Santiago entered the game being only second to last in the standings, with a 6 – 17 record and not only managed to outplay one of the biggest powerhouses in the continent but also survive their comeback in the fourth quarter.
Real Madrid was trailing throughout most of the second half, until Sergio Llull (17 points) made it 79 – 80 with 2 minutes remaining. McConnell immediately responded to give his team the lead while the “Blancos” were missing in one long range attempt after the other.
Obradoiro players remained ahead since when their opponents began fouling them to stop the clock, they didn’t spare any gifts from the free throw line.
Luka Doncic also dropped 17 points for Real while dishing out 5 assists and Jaycee Carrol with Gustavo Ayon had 10 each.
