Representatives from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Baskonia and Unicaja Malaga are meeting this afternoon at a restaurant in Barcelona to explore exit options from ACB and the creation of a new championship that might replace, or compete, with Liga Endesa, according to Mundo Deportivo.
These are the four out of the five Spanish teams that are playing in the 2017-2018 EuroLeague. The other team is reigning Liga Endesa champion Valencia, which is not participating in the above meeting.
According to the report by Mundo Deportivo, these clubs are upset by the failure of ACB (Association of Basketball Clubs) to reduce the number of league teams, to 16 as initially agreed with the Spanish Federation and CSD, the Higher Sports Council. Real Betis was re-admitted to Liga Endesa following a lawsuit and the teams for the new season became 18.
These clubs have been contemplating the idea of founding a new Spanish domestic championship for quite some time and this latest turn of events was the last straw.
The Spanish League (Liga Endesa) is widely considered as the best domestic competition in Europe and a breeding ground for a great number of talents that eventually succeed in the NBA.
