Spanish club Estudiantes issued an announcement stating that the signing of former player Lucas Nogueira by fellow ACB team Fuenlabrada “lacks legal validity” since the Brazilian center’s rights are “owned by Estudiantes.”
Estudiantes mentions that they own the ACB rights to Nogueira according to a contract signed by the player, his agent and the club back in July 2014.
The announcement also mentions that Estudiantes will make use of its “federative rights” over Nogueira before the ACB and any other institution.
Nogueira played for Estudiantes from 2009 to 2014 (save for few months in 2011-2012), before joining the Toronto Raptors.
UPDATE: ACB officially requested from Estudiantes the documents claiming their rights of Nogueira and the club refused to send them. Four years ago, the Raptors have paid a $650,000 buy out which nullified any rights and that’s why ACB approves the signing of the player with Fuenlabrada as our own Nikos Varlas reports.
