The Spanish Players’ Union (ABP) reacted to the announcement of the agreement between EuroLeague and ELPA (EuroLeague Players’ Association) on the 2019-2020 calendar of the competition by publishing a “Q&A” on the new schedule.
ABP mentions the fatigue of the players due to the increased number of games. “The increase in matches with the subsequent trips means an increase in the physical load and fatigue of the players that undoubtedly affects their health and can have serious consequences,” ABP said.
Regarding the effect of the new calendar on national competitions, ABP commented that: “The voracity of EuroLeague goes against national leagues, especially our ACB. we understand that there can be a strong EuroLeague without undermining the potential of the league in which our participating teams have developed in the maximum continental competition.”
ABP also addressed the representation of players by saying the following: “ACB players are represented by their ABP association, which defends their rights. We are an independent association whose only interest is the player. Without that independence from clubs and leagues, you can not defend the players. Other interests will always prevail, not those of our associates. Therefore, an association that does not comply with these premises can never represent them.”
