Sergi Vidal announced his decision to retire from professional basketball. After 20 seasons on the courts, the 38-year old former player of Real Madrid, Baskonia and Unicaja among others decided that it was time to leave the courts.
As he wrote himself via Instagram:
After some time meditating, the time has come. I have decided to hang up my shoes and leave the practice of the professional sport. It has been 20 seasons full of happiness, sacrifice, effort and full dedication to what I liked most in life, to play BASKETBALL.
I leave it behind feeling very happy and with the satisfaction of having always given my 100%, having respected every one of the jerseys that I have worn with pride and having put the needs of the team before mine, always trying to be a good teammate, professional and be there for what it took.
I can’t stop looking back and smile right now. I am privileged, because of the experience, that I learned and enjoyed. Of course, there have been hard times, many of them, but I thank them for helping me grow and be better, always using them as motivation and not letting them overcome me.
So, a new life full of challenges and personal projects begins that I face with the same desire and passion that this boy from Badalona did to Vitoria, passing through Madrid, San Sebastián, Málaga, again Badalona, Lugo, Fuenlabrada and finally Manresa.
I would like to use this letter to thank each and every one of the people I have met on this trip. Some of them I do not know, but they still have shown me so many times their love.
And, of course, in case I haven’t done it enough times during these years, I want to thank my Family and Friends for having always understood, supported and helped me in this way, to pursue my dream.
It’s not a farewell, BASKETBALL, it’s a see you soon!
