A man was arrested for pretending to be Zalgiris Kaunas guard Rokas Jokubaitis and scamming a woman for 10,000 euros after dating her for months, according to numerous reports from Lithuania.
Lithuanian police in Vilnius arrested and detained the person Saturday (12/11) after a woman filed a report on the person. They found Zalgiris gear and team-related objects in his house.
The woman’s story had become viral in Lithuania during the last week after a friend of her made a Facebook post, asking others to be cautious about man who is pretending to be Jokubaitis on social networks and conning women for money. According to the post, this person messaged the victim on Tinder and told her that he was Zalgiris player Rokas Jokubaitis. After they first met, with the man being dressed fully in Zalgiris’ attire that also had Jokubaitis’ name on, they began dating.
The man visited the woman in Vilnius every day and he was also sending her videos from Zalgiris activities like practices and travels. After two months, he asked her to help him with some problems he had with paying his taxes and conned her to give him 10 thousand euros in cash. The woman eventually found out that the man she was dating wasn’t Jokubaitis but an impostor after going through his phone. She then went to the police which later arrested the person.
“I don’t really understand what’s going on yet but I look at things like that negatively because my name is used without my knowledge and people are being deceived,” Jokubaitis said to Delfi. “But there’s a good side too, because this story is instructive and it will protect people from even greater thefts and scams.”
