A message was written on the open court that features Giannis Antetokounmpo’s image, in the area of Sepolia, Athens, where the “Greek Freak” grew up.
“If he wasn’t in the NBA, maybe he would be dead in the Omonoia police department,” was written on the graffiti with Antetokounmpo’s likeness.
The message is a reference to the death of 34-year-old Nigerian immigrant Ebuka Mamasubek in the Omonoia (the central area of Athens) Police Department on February 8. Ebuka, a father of two, officially died due to “pulmonary edema”.
According to some reports, and after his death was officially acknowledged by the police with a 10-day delay, Ebuka was allegedly murdered after getting severely beaten by the police. His widow said that she doesn’t believe the reason for her husband’s death was pathological since he never had any health problem.
Following Ebuka’s death, there had been protests in Athens against police violence.
