ALBA Berlin defeated MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg, 75-74, on Sunday at the Audi Dome, and on a 163-139 aggregate score lifted its ninth German League title, first since 2008. Aito Garcia Reneses’ team completed a two-game sweep in the final going undefeated over the ten matches in easyCredit BBL’s season-ending tournament.
Niels Giffey and Martin Hermannsson shared a team-high 14 points in the final game of the season in Germany. Marcus Eriksson chipped in with 13 points of his own in Game 2 of the finals and Landry Nnoko scored 12.
The losing side coached by John Patrick failed to regain the lead beyond the first quarter despite a solid finish and Thomas Wimbush pouring a game-high 19 points. Jaleen Smith summarized his strong all-around outing with 15 points, six assists, five steals, and four rebounds. Nick Weiler-Babb had a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double.
Marcos Knight missed Sunday’s contest due to a foot injury but was named MVP of the season-ending tournament. He averaged 18.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per match.
The ten-team tournament to conclude the 2019-20 season following the hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic was held in Munich starting on June 6.
Back in February, ALBA captured the German Cup as well in its early leap towards the double for the 2019-20 season.
