The basketball dominance of Brose Baskets Bamberg in Germany was confirmed again this Sunday. For the third consecutive year Bamberg won the domestic Cup final, this time against Telekom Bonn (82-73).
It was a tough night for Bonn, the host team of the Cup final four and the majority of the 6.000 fans that attended the final. But it was a historic night for Bamberg, which became the first team that have won three German Cups in a row. Only Bayern Leverkusen and Alba Berlin in their heydays managed to win two consecutive Cups.
“We are still hungry, we want also the championship”, declared Bamberg team captain Casey Jacobsen after the end of the final and as you can read in the recent interview of coach Chris Fleming in Eurohoops.net, his team is setting its sights high.
Marcus Slaughter was the top scorer of Bamberg with 17 points in the game, but the good news for everybody was that this year’s final four was a commercial success, a sold out event. “It was an advertisement for German Basketball”, said the managing director of the German League Jan Pommer, the guy that is also the brain behind the possible implementation of financial fair play in Euroleague. Already four teams, between them Bayern Munich, want to host the Cup Final Four of 2013.
