After losing Nick Calathes as a potential target, Panathinaikos is moving fast in the market and the Greens are in talks with DeMarcus Nelson in order to sign him for next season. The American guard is not a free agent but the Greek champions can get a deal with him.
To be exact Nelson has a contract until the summer of 2015 with Crvena Zvezda, which included an opt out clause which has already expired. However, according to sources near the negotiations, the player has not been paid yet in full for last season and the debts of the Serbian club can be exchanged for his release.
However, the decision of releasing Nelson is not only money related. The American guard is one of the leaders of the team and even if the Serbs gain some money by letting him go, they would lose what he brings on the floor. So nothing can be considered final yet, even if Panathinaikos considers the player one of the best available choices for their back court.
