Houston Rockets center Usman Garuba plans to participate in the upcoming FIBA EuroBasket that will be held one month before he begins his sophomore NBA season, expressing his commitment to the Spanish national team
“I want to go to the Eurobasket and I’m available to Sergio Scariolo,” Garuba said in an interview with AS. “We are Spain and Spain always competes. We want to fight for the medals despite the circumstances, despite the absences. We are ready for everything.”
Spain, the reigning world champion, won the bronze medal in the 2017 edition of the EuroBasket. This year’s tournament was originally scheduled to take place in 2021 but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This EuroBasket will Mark Garuba’s second appearance with the senior national team after the 2021 Olympic Games. As a youth, the 20-year-old big man was a star for Spain in the teams that won the gold medal in the U18 European Championship of 2019 – where he was also named MVP – and the 2016 U16 European Championship while also claiming the silver in the 2018 U16 European Championship.
