Andrejs Grazulis scored 18 points, Kristers Zoriks added 11 and Latvia prevailed over Slovakia by 12 (64-52) in a largely uneventful game.
The hosts were leading the score from wire to wire with Slovakia being competitive but not threatening.
With the game still open, Latvia got a solid 14-point advantage (60-46) entering the last three minutes and didn’t have to worry after that. Coach Luca Banchi gave minutes to all his players and kept things under control.
Slovakia tried their best and even got momentarily a 36-34 lead in the third period, however, they couldn’t get anything better. Simon Krajcovic with 12 points was the top scorer on a nine-player rotation.
Thanks to this result, Latvia and Belgium are tied at 2-0 in Group C, while Spain and Slovakia dropped to 0-2.
