The Spanish Basketball Federation, FEB, via a collaboration with the Community of Madrid, announced a candidacy to welcome the 2029 EuroBasket in the capital of the country.
The bid to host the major international tournament was confirmed on Thursday morning.
Previous bids for the hosting rights of the 2029 EuroBasket stretch from the Hellenic Basketball Federation, HBF, to the Basketball Federation of Slovenia, KZS. FIBA is expected to decide on the venue of the next meeting of the top European national teams before the 2025 EuroBasket.
According to the plan presented by FEB, the 43rd edition of the EuroBasket will be played across 22 days. If the bid is successful, the entire tournament will be held in Madrid’s WiZink Center, both the preliminary and knockout stages.
Similar to the 2025 EuroBasket, the 2029 EuroBasket will feature 24 national teams from Europe, including the host or hosts. For example, Cyprus, Finland, Poland, and Latvia received an automatic berth to this summer’s tournament as co-hosts. Besides the next installment, the three previous editions of EuroBasket, in 2015, 2017 and 2022, were co-hosted by four countries.
Spain previously welcomed the EuroBasket field in 1973 and won silver, in 1997 and ranked fifth, and in 2007 for a silver-medal performance.
Defending the 2022 EuroBasket championship, the fourth gold medal in the history of the men’s senior national team, the current selection guided by Sergio Scariolo clinched a berth in the 2025 EuroBasket during the recent international window.
