As expected, Victor Wembanyama is taking the NBA by storm. In his second year, he is averaging numbers that only David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon managed during their sophomore seasons.
The San Antonio Spurs got themselves a rare gem in the 2023 Draft, and it also seems that France will be able to count on Wemby to spend his summers with the national team.
Wembanyama has given a thumbs-up to playing for Les Bleus in the upcoming 2025 EuroBasket—and every summer after it.
“I don’t know the exact dates, but there’s always time to make it work with the French team. You just have to sacrifice a bit of your physical preparation for the following season. So yeah, it’s definitely my goal to play for the French team every summer,” Wemby said to L’Équipe.
This is definitely big news for France and their new head coach, Frederic Fauthoux.
“I’ve spoken with him briefly since he became coach. But we haven’t formally discussed any specific deadlines,” the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year said about his interactions with the new head coach of the French national team.
At the Olympics, Wembanyama led France in several statistical categories. He averaged a PIR of 20.8, 15.8 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.7 blocks, and 2.0 steals per game—all team highs in Paris.
With Victor Wembanyama by their side, France will be a force to reckon with at the upcoming EuroBasket.
