The head coach of the senior national team of France, Frederic Fauthoux, updated the status of Victor Wembanyama, heading to the EuroBasket 2025.
“We had Victor before his operation,” he mentioned after the draw to set up the EuroBasket groups, revealing contact with Wemby in France and a surgery to address deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.
“We’re going to keep his plan and program in house for now,” replied the interim head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, Mitch Johnson, when asked about the update following the decision to rule out the 21-year-old big for the remainder of the 2024-25 season in late February.
“He is motivated to be part of the team,” added 52-year-old Fauthoux on Wemby potentially joining his side this summer, “We will see as his physical development progresses. We will make the decision when the time is right. Until then, we will be in the dark. But he feels good, everything is going well.”
In addition to the Alien, the selector of the national team named Zaccharie Risacher of the Atlanta Hawks and Alex Sarr of the Washington Wizards as other potential members of the EuroBasket squad.
In the NBA Regular Season, the Spurs fell to the Cleveland Cavaliers, 124-116, in Rocket Arena, on Thursday. Among the remaining European options for Johnson, Polish Jeremy Sochan went for 13 points, five rebounds, two assists, and one block. Georgian Sandro Mamukelashvili had three assists, two rebounds, and one steal.
