Antetokounmpo and Kings‘ Giorgos Papagiannis are the two NBA players of the roster, as veteran Kostas Koufos and Hawks‘ Tyler Dorsey are not available for the team this summer.
And of course, the team is expected to be built around Giannis. As he said, speaking to the local press: “I want to bring success with this team. I will be there for the team for the next 15 years. I am not thinking about the end of the road, but the journey to get there. We have to go step by step, prepare the best way we can and aim for the biggest possible goal. In December I will be 23 years old. I am a grown up. It sounds nice to say that we are going to compete for a medal, but we don’t need any kind of pressure. Personally, there’s no pressure on me. I am not the star of the team”.
This of course sounds odd, since Antetokounmpo is the marquee name of the team, but he explained his approach to the way the team will be structured: “There’s not a single star in this team. My goal is to become a good teammate. I want to become a better teammate day by day. Of course there’s talent in this group. I am very happy to be here and we need to be focused on our goal”.
Considering the progress of Giannis, the know how of the Greek national team and also the fact that with the exception of Spain, many teams are missing key members, Greece is considered one of the main contenders for the gold.
