Following a mutual decision between the Spanish Basketball Federation and the Oklahoma City Thunder, Alex Abrines will stay out of the remainder of the EuroBasket.
As reported by Spanish Marca, the knee injury that the 24-year-old swingman suffered in Game 1 of the tournament vs Montenegro is enough to cause an alarm. “There is no veto in this kind of situation. The only thing that matters is the condition of the player,” is the Federation’s position.
The “Rojas” will continue the tourney with only 11 players. They had already lost Sergio Llull and Pau Ribas during the preparation but remain the favorites to win the gold medal and climb to the top spot of the podium for the 4th time in the last five European Championships.
“After Serio Llull’s injury, we decided that Alex was going to make a step forward and become our starting shooting guard. It’s a shame that he won’t stay with us until for the rest of the championship. He was a pretty important piece of our puzzle. That’s what I can tell you as a coach”, commented Spain head coach Sergio Scariolo after the win over Hungary.
