The town of Rottach-Egern in Germany hosted on Wednesday the penultimate meeting of the 2014-2019 term of office FIBA Europe Board before this year’s elections.
In the meeting which was chaired by FIBA Europe President, Turgay Demirel and attended by FIBA Secretary General, Andreas Zagklis and FIBA Executive Director Europe, Kamil Novak, the Board unanimously decided to recommend to the FIBA Europe General Assembly certain amendments to the FIBA Europe Bye-Laws, as agreed upon by FIBA and FIBA Europe.
The amendments will improve the level of coordination between the World and European bodies within the FIBA family.
In other matters, the Board members were presented with reports from the various FIBA Europe Commissions and with a summary of the recent, successful last window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Qualifiers.
Also discussed was an array of topics related to the next series of qualification involving men’s national teams – the upcoming FIBA EuroBasket 2021 Qualifiers, due to start in November this year and this August’s FIBA EuroBasket 2021 Pre-Qualifiers Third Round which will decide the last four teams to join the Qualifiers.
Pertaining to the above the Board was presented with an update regarding the bids for FIBA EuroBasket 2021 and FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2021 which were opened in January.
A record number of 13 countries have initially expressed interest about the bid for the men’s event while eight federations were interested in the women’s tournament.
Following the conclusion of the bidding process, which is still open, and the evaluation of all bids, a decision on the hosts will then be taken by the new Board, term of office 2019-2023, that will be voted on in May.
