Unicaja Malaga announced that the team has named Fotis Katskaris as the new head coach, for the remainder of the season.
Per Unicaja:
Unicaja already has a new coach. The Malaga club has reached an agreement with Greek coach Fotis Katsikaris (Korydallos, May 16, 1967) to lead the team for the remainder of the season and the next, with an option for both parties to end the relationship at the end of this campaign.
Katsikaris is a highly experienced coach, having passed through clubs in his native Greece, Russia, Israel and Spain. In fact, in our country since his first experience in the 2006-07 season on the bench of Valencia Basket, he has gone through Bilbao Basket, UCAM Murcia, Iberostar Tenerife and Herbalife Gran Canaria.
It was in the whole of the Basque Country where he reaped his greatest achievements. He led Bilbao Basket for three and a half seasons in which he achieved the best successes in the history of the Biscayan club, reaching the final of the Endesa League in the 2010-11 season and the Euroleague quarterfinal playoffs in the 2011 season. 12. His last experience in the Spanish league is very recent, since last season he managed Herbalife Gran Canaria, a team with which he also played in the Final Phase of Valencia.
Katiskaris began his career as first coach at AEK Athens (2003-04), a club where he was previously an assistant coach since the 1998-99 season. In his career in European basketball, he has been in Russia, where he has led Dynamo St. Petersburg and Lokomotiv Kuban, and in Israel at Hapoel Jerusalem. In addition, he lived the 2018-19 season in the United States as part of the technical staff of the Utah Jazz in the NBA.
In addition, Fotis Katsikaris has been selected from Greece from 2014 to 2016. In this journey he finished in the 9th position of the 2014 World Cup (he fell in the round of 32 against the runner-up Serbia by 90 to 72) or in the Eurobasket 2015 he finished in 5th position (fell with Spain, tournament champion, in the quarterfinals 73-71). Finally, it should be noted that Fotis Katsikaris was the Russian coach for several months ahead of Eurobasket 2013 but did not manage any matches.
The coach arrives in Malaga this afternoon, from Athens, to conduct his first training session starting at seven in the afternoon at the Martín Carpena.
