Jacob Wiley was suspended by Buducnost VOLI, the team announced Friday.
Wiley, 27, after competing in the 2023 FIBA World Cup European Qualifiers for North Macedonia failed to report to practice and left Podgorica without the team’s consent, per the press release. He averaged 11 points and seven rebounds per contest as his side was forced down to 0-2 falling behind Spain, Ukraine, and Georgia in Group G.
The player’s departure was connected to a personal family issue, his agent informed Buducnost. The team will update his status at the appropriate time, as noted.
In early July, the American-born naturalized North Macedonian big man joined the Montenegrin team. He has since put up 10.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.6 blocks per 7DAYS EuroCup game, and 4.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per AdmiralBet ABA League game.
Before Buducnost, Wiley logged 31 appearances in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague between Panathinaikos and Gran Canaria, 14 in the Basketball Champions League, and carried previous experience of seven games played in EuroCup as well. He also played in five NBA games as a member of the Brooklyn Nets in 2017-18.
His current side, coached by Aleksandar Dzikic, headed into the international break tied with Gran Canaria on top of the EuroCup Regular Season Group B standings. Carrying a 4-1 W-L tally, Buducnost will visit Promitheas in Round 6 action next Wednesday.
The 6-3 record paints the picture so far in ABA. Up next, a home fixture opposite SC Derby Sunday.
