The search for a new head coach landed Andrej Zakelj at Buducnost VOLI.
The Podgorica outfit announced the decision on Saturday, shortly after a loss to Igokea m:tel in AdmiralBet ABA League Regular Season Round 8.
Petar Mijovic stepped down from his role as the head coach last week. Taking over as the interim head coach, Vladimir Todorovic logged a home win against Split, before suffering defeats to ratiopharm Ulm in Round 7 of the BKT EuroCup Regular Season and against the Bosnia-Herzegovina champions in Laktasi Sports Hall.
Zakelj, 45, moved on from SC Derby after two years as the play-caller of the fellow team located in the capital of Montenegro. His departure combined with a balanced 4-4 record in ABA, on the heels of stunning Partizan Mozzart Bet in the championship game of the 2023 ABA Supercup. Slovenia’s Koper Primorska and Sentjur, and Poland’s Start Lublin are among previous head-coaching jobs.
Before naming the new boss, falling to Igokea marked the second loss over eight showings in the 2023-24 installment of the regional league. At the continental level, a 2-5 start falls one win shy of the six advancing spots of Group B. Next week’s schedule features a couple of home games with Dolomiti Energia Trento and Cedevita Olimpija visiting Moraca Sports Center for EuroCup action on Tuesday and ABA action on Saturday.
In late December, the Podgorica clubs facing each other in Round 13 of the ABA Regular Season will set Zakelj opposite his previous team.
