After elimination in the BKT EuroCup and a disappointing run in Greece’s Stoiximan GBL, Aris Midea releases head coach Giannis Kastritis from his contract

Aris Midea dismissed head coach Giannis Kastritis.

The decision was announced on Monday.

Kastritis, 42, had been in charge of the team based in Thessaloniki since launching his second stint with the storied club in 2021.

After guiding the team safely through financial limitations over the first two years, his coaching efforts resulted in reaching the Eighthfinals of the 2023-24 edition of the BKT EuroCup and the Semifinals of the 2024 Playoffs at the domestic level. In the 2024-25 season, his side is 3-13 in the EuroCup journey and already eliminated from the approaching postseason, while sitting slightly over the relegation zone in the Stoiximan GBL with a 5-11 record.

Besides struggling to get on the win column across continental and domestic competitions, Kastritis was facing the backlash from his controversial reaction to supporters of Aris letting go against him and players during a timeout in a meeting with JL Bourg in Nick Galis Hall on January 15, in Round 15 of the EuroCup Regular Season. He recently revealed threats toward himself and his family.

The native of Tripoli was under contract until the end of the season.

Moving on without Kastritis, Aris will complete the EuroCup journey by hosting Veolia Towers Hamburg and U-BT Cluj-Napoca in Thessaloniki over the last two weeks of the Regular Season of the second-tier club continental competition of Euroleague Basketball. With the focus on improving the domestic situation, the next GBL fixture is on the road against Marousi on Saturday.
