John Roberson broke the EuroCup record for most 3-pointers made by a player in a single game, dropping 11 for 42 points in total as ASVEL defeated 129 – 128 Gran Canaria after no less than 55 minutes of action.
The American guard also dished out 8 assists and grabbed 4 rebounds for 44 (!) PIR, helping his team finish Group D at the top seed, following an epic battle against the Spaniards. While these numbers, are pretty much incredible, it gets crazier considering that he had 0 points at the break.
Roberson’s actions were powerful enough to counter the performances of Pablo Aguilar (25 points), DJ Seeley (20), Ondrej Balvin (14 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists) and Marcus Eriksson (18 points) that weren’t enough in the end for Gran Canaria.
Dave Lighty added 21 points, 5 rebounds plus 5 assists and captain Charles Kahudi 16 points, 12 rebounds, 5 steals plus the game-winner with 20 seconds left, forcing the team from Las Palmas to finish fourth in the Group.
This match pretty much overshadowed everything that took place in the EuroCup regular season that was concluded tonight. Yesterday, a fantastic Drew Gordon led Zenit St. Petersburg to the Top 16 and showed the competition’s exit door to Tofas Bursa.
Earlier, Dominique Sutton’s 17 points and 9 rebounds paced Trento to a 94 – 84 road win over already eliminated Ratiopharm Ulm.
