Recalcati will replace Luca Banchi, who stepped down from his position after the team’s win against Varese.
The 72-year-old coach was a legendary player and became a well-respected coach who has been linked to Italian basketball for more than half a century.
He started his coaching career with Bergamo and has also coached Cantu, Reggio Calabria, Aresium, Varese, Fortitudo Bologna, Siena, Sutor Montegranaro and Reyer Venezia as well as the Italian national team. He played 17 seasons for Cantu, which he helped to two Italian League championships, three Korac Cups, three Cup Winners’ Cups and an Intercontinental Cup title.
As a coach, Recalcati won the Italian League with three different teams – Varese in 1999, Fortitudo in 2000 and Siena in 2004. He took Siena to the 2004 EuroLeague Final Four in Tel Aviv. He also won medals with Italy as player and coach. He led Italy to EuroBasket bronze medals in 1971 and 1975 as a player and did even better as a coach, winning the silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games and a bronze from EuroBasket 2003.
