Joventut Badalona forward Kerem Kanter, Enes Kanter’s younger brother, tweeted that he won’t travel to Istanbul, Turkey for the upcoming EuroCup game of his team against Darussafaka Tekfen Wednesday (20/11).
“I will not be traveling to Turkey to play our Eurocup game on Nov. 20th. I apologize to the basketball fans in Turkey who wanted to see me play back in my hometown. Good luck to my team,” Kanter wrote.
Enes Kanter, an outspoken critic of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has been labeled a terrorist by the Turkish government for his support of exiled cleric Fethullah Gulen. Earlier this year, Istanbul’s Public Prosecutor applied for a “Red Notice” to be issued on Kanter, on charges of him being a member of an “armed terrorist organization.”
Mehmet Kanter, Enes’ and Kerem’s father, has been also been charged for “being a member of a terrorist organization.” He’s facing a jail sentence up to 15 years.
