After signing center Octavius Ellis, Olympiacos Piraeus may also add a guard if the club finds something suitable in the market.
“We are few, in numbers. So we are in the market to look for a guard,” Olympiacos coach Giorgos Bartzoks said in the pre-game presser ahead of the EuroLeague game vs. Baskonia Thursday. “If it’s a case like Ellis’, that was a good option for us, from any way you look at it, we will proceed. If not, I don’t feel like bringing a player on board just for the sake of it.”
Olympiacos has been minus an extra backcourt option after parting ways with guard Will Cherry earlier in January.
“The team has undergone many coaching and player changes. Each time there’s a new addition or departure, the team chemistry is disturbed. I’m not pro changes. Coaches, in general, aren’t,” Bartzokas added.
Olympiacos and Baskonia are tied at 8 – 13 and on 12th place in the EuroLeague standings. They are at a two-win distance from the playoffs zone with 13 rounds remaining in the regular season.
“Baskonia is, more or less, at a similar position with ours, performance-wise and results-wise,” Bartzokas said. “It’s a quality team and there’s no doubt about it. Beating Real Madrid on the road (in ACB) shows that. But it’s a team that has lots of ups and downs in its performance, mainly due to the fact that it doesn’t have good chemistry this season. They try to find that. Now, they’ve added a point guard. You have to really play well to beat them.”
