Following the game between Panathinaikos and Barcelona in Athens on Friday, Luigi Lamonica was injured, as an attack on the cab carrying the referees took place and caused a reaction all over Europe. The ELPA, EuroLeague, players, stood by the referees’ side and Euroleague Basketball even warned on evaluating moving games outside of Greece.
The UEBO (Union of EuroLeague Basketball Officials) also condemned the events in Athens, with the following statement:
The Union of EuroLeague Basketball Officials strongly condemns the attack suffered by the game officials of the PANATHINAIKOS-BARCELONA match of February 22, 2020.
In no way, this type of criminal activity can be allowed to be repeated and what has happened
should make us reflect on the measures that must be taken both within and outside the field.
We cannot wait for a referee to be seriously injured or even worse (killed) as could happen
last night in Athens and luckily, for everybody, it didn’t happen.
We hope that immediately together with the representatives of the EuroLeague and the
Clubs, we will find a way to eliminate such acts, which have nothing to do with the sport.
