Following the ECA Shareholders Executive Board teleconference on Wednesday that discussed possible ways to continue the season, Zalgiris GM Paulius Motiejunas talked to 15min.lt‘s Donatas Urbonas and stated that there is no intention to hold games until as late in the year as of August.
Since Olympic tournaments were postponed, the Euroleague board had no need to rush to cancel the season according to Motiejunas. There is no likely timeline when season might resume, though there is no intention to follow NBA scenario to finish the season in August as he stated.
On the financial impact of the coronavirus to the competition, Motiejunas added that Euroleague will discuss the financial commitments during the season suspension with ELPA and HC board. Most likely, the teams will join a collective agreement on how to handle these financial situations, rather than clubs handling it individually.
While it’s still early to tell, according to Motiejunas, Zalgiris might have to reduce its budget by 33% to deal with the financial damage caused by the lockdown.
