The VTB United League officially announced its season cancellation on Friday, confirming prior reports after a teleconference held by the clubs earlier in the week, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the announcement, the League Champion for the 2019-20 season will not be determined, since the participating teams played a different number of matches and the regular season was not completed. That being said, Khimki Moscow will have a secured spot for the 2020-21 EuroLeague season, as reported by RIA news agency.
While the final classification of the league will be presented later on, Khimki can keep its EuroLeague spot, after finishing in the top position of the standings for the 2019-20 season and being the runner-up in the 2018-19 season (last season’s champions CSKA Moscow are one of EuroLeague’s licensed teams).
The proposal by VTB will be for Khimki to compete, though for the 2020-21 season there will be no connection between local leagues’ ranking and open EuroLeague spots. However, one of the three wildcards available is expected to be given to a team competing in the VTB League.
