Sascha Hupmann died at the age of 49 after a long battle with ataxia, a neurological disorder that wreaked havoc on his voice, motor skills and life.
The 216cm tall former center lived and worked (before the illness took its tall) in Evansville where he also played for the University in the early ’90s.
He logged a total of 67 matches for the German national team while during his club career, Hupmann wore the jerseys of TVG Trier, Bayer Leverkusen, ALBA Berlin, Panathinaikos, Iraklis and TSG Humana Ehingen.
With Leverkusen, he won seven straight titles in Germany and later on one with Alba. He also added two trophies with Panathinaikos.
