The city of Thessaloniki has offered to host the remaining games of the 2019-20 EuroLeague season, as reported by the newspaper “Makedonia”.
EuroLeague and Thessaloniki mayor Konstantinos Zervas, along with municipality board representatives, are presented to be in advanced talks and the plan is to host games in the Nick Galis Hall and PAOK Sports Arena, according to the report.
While EuroLeague is working towards reaching a solution to conclude the season, Athens, Belgrade, Cologne, and Kaunas are among the candidates to host the final phase of the competition.
In Thessaloniki’s case, representatives focus on the fact that health facilities in the city are within easy reach to the arenas, and also on the fact that the city is experiencing a decline of coronavirus cases. In the report, it is also mentioned that they could expect up to 15,000 bookings, though EuroLeague has already ruled out the possibility of having spectators in attendance for the final phase.
The number might be explained by the use of city hotels by the 18 EuroLeague clubs, still, it’s quite optimistic.
