Giorgos Vovoras takes charge as Panathinaikos’ new head coach following the departure of Rick Pitino in March. The two sides agreed on a deal and 43-year-old Vovoras will take on head coach duties after spending six years as an assistant on the Greens’ bench.
Vovoras has served as an assistant coach next to Argyris Pedoulakis, Xavi Pascual and Rick Pitino and first joined Panathinaikos in 2012, while he took on head coaching duties for a few games after Pascual exited the team. In 2014 he moved to UNICS Kazan as an assistant coach and coached APOEL Nicosia during the 2015-16 season before making his return to Greece.
An official announcement of the deal is expected in early June, while it is likely that Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos will address the public via a press conference at that time, to inform on the decisions taken about the future of the team.
