Giannakopoulos opens fire against EuroLeague, Bertomeu

Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos uploaded a series of messages on his personal Instagram profile with implications against EuroLeague Basketball and CEO Jordi Bertomeu, without naming either of them.

“How is it possible for a 20-year-old league with all the big clubs not able to financially compete with a newborn league that doesn’t yet have ‘big names’,” Giannakopoulos wrote, an obvious reference to EuroLeague and the Basketball Champions League. Panathinaikos has been reportedly considering a move to BCL.

Giannakopoulos then wrote another message, saying: “So there’s no better scenario than being fu–ed every week by the mafiozos… being treated with disrespect in all aspects and statements… being blackmailed to abide with dictatorship-like obligations, not being paid in time and not even been told what will happen with the (petty) future payments??” Bertomeu mentioned in an interview that Panathinaikos “knows that they don’t have a better scenario outside the EuroLeague, but a much worse scenario.”

“Since we are the ones who bring the, by far, largest revenue,” Giannakopoulos also wrote in bold green letters.

Giannakopoulos had expressed concerns during the ECA assembly that took place Monday (25/5) regarding next season’s revenues following the cancelation of 2019-2020.
