Panathinaikos Athens owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos posted a response to EuroLeague CEO Jordi Bertomeu saying that the future of the Greek powerhouse “won’t be better” outside the competition. Bertomeu made these comments to Israeli network Sport 5.
Giannakoopoulos wrote the following as a part of a story on his Instagram profile with a photo from a report of Bertomeu’s comments: “You said it for the fourth time in five days… After all, is it possible that you are worried that EuroLeague’s future won’t be good without the most successful club that also brings the most revenues to your competition?”
During the remote meeting of the ECA assembly that decided the cancelation of the 2019-2020 EuroLeague, Giannakopoulos expressed his concerns regarding the revenues of the clubs ahead of the new season.
Since the meeting, there have been numerous rumors and some reports that Panathinaikos is considering leaving EuroLeague to join the Basketball Champions League.
However, the EuroLeague and Jordi Bertomeu personally have stretched on numerous occasions, that Panathinaikos will ultimately stay in the league.
“I believe Panathinaikos will stay with us. There was a similar issue in the past but there is no official announcement by the club. Teams know they are in the elite of basketball nd future outside the EuroLeague isn’t going to be bright”, said Bertomeu two days ago.
