ASVEL Villeurbanne president Tony Parker said that promoting T.J. Parker, his brother, to the head coach position was an “obvious” decision towards his goal to keep the club’s French identity and preserve a certain level of continuity.
“This new coaching staff is an obvious choice for us,” Parker said in a press conference held in Astroballe arena, Tuesday (23/6), per ASVEL. “Our wish was to remain a 100% French club and work in continuity. T.J. [Parker] has been at the club for eight years and now it’s a good time to give him a chance. Now we have to bring trophies. Our coaching staff is very comprehensive and of a very good standard for France. Frederic Fauthoux can bring a lot to T.J. with his experience and that can make a difference.”
T.J. Parker, who previously served as an assistant under Zvezdan Mitrovic added the following:
“The idea is to create a real partnership with Frederic Fauthoux, to work on a team. The watchword remains unchanged: make the most of each member of the staff. It’s a great reward for me and my motivation is to bring results.”
ASVEL hired Frederic Fauthoux as chief assistant coach to Parker. Fauthoux spent five years with Metropolitans 92 before joining ASVEL. “I am very proud and very touched with the trust Tony has placed in me,” Fauthoux said. “When I was presented with this project, I thought it was time to move forward and take a new step forward in my career. It’s a new adventure for me. “
So far in offseason, ASVEL has signed former two-time NBA champion Norris Cole, guard Allerik Freeman, wing Paul Lacombe, center Moustapha Fall and center Kevarrius Hayes. The team has also extended the contracts of guard David Lighty, forward Guerschon Yabusele and center Ismael Bako.
