Fenerbahce Beko announced that the club has reached an agreement with general manager Maurizio Gherardini to extend his contract for two more seasons. The Italian executive has been with the club since 2014.
“I’m extremely excited to continue being part of the Fenerbahce family,” Gherardini said in a statement for Fenerbahce’s website. “For this, I’d like to thank our president Ali Koc, our vice president Semih Ozsoy and our entire board of directors. After seven wonderful seasons led by Zeljko Obradovic, we are now opening a new page. We should all be ready for this new challenge and adventure. I hope our fans are always behind us, as in the past. We will need their support more than ever and we will do everything we can to deserve this support.”
Gherardini has been one of the architects of Fenerbahce evolving into a European powerhouse. With him on board, Fener won the EuroLeague championship of 2017 (the first in the history of Turkish basketball) while making the Final Four for four straight years. The Turkish side also won multiple domestic titles.
In 2017, Gherardini won chosen as the EuroLeague Executive of the Year.
Earlier in July, Fenerbahce parted ways with coach Zeljko Obradovic after seven years.
