Alex Mumbru and Joan Plaza are also candidates for the head coaching job at Zalgiris Kaunas, according to Eurohoops sources. Ertugrul Erdogan remains the frontrunner, as reported by Donatas Urbonas.

The Lithuanian powerhouse is looking for its next head coach following the departure of Sarunas Jasikevicius. The 44-year-old Lithuanian left after four seasons at the helm moving on to FC Barcelona.

Mumbru, 41, became the RETAbet Bilbao boss shortly after concluding his playing career as a member of the Spanish club’s squad. He’s been with Bilbao either as a player or head coach since 2009.

Plaza, 56, previously coached Zalgiris during the 2012-13 season and his last job was at Zenit Saint-Petersburg between 2018 and last February. Other head coaching gigs focus in Spain with Real Madrid, Unicaja Malaga, and Real Betis.

Erdogan, 51, currently holds the head coaching role at Galatasaray Doga Sigorta. According to Urbonas, Jasikevicius strongly supports his former coach to take over Zalgiris.
